I've had this really awesome feeling lately that the stuff I'm leaning in my classes is relevant and practical and applicable.
It's really awesome.
I'm working with this really great non-profit called right now Witness for Peace to fulfill some requirements for classes. They do really great work trying to effect US policy and it's support of violence and unjust trade laws in Latin America. I went to an event last night where people who went on Delegations (trips with Witness for Peace where people go over to countries in Latin America and worked with individuals and policy makers there) shared about their experiences and some of the board members and organizers of WFP spoke and they threw around a lot of words that I would not have known if it weren't for my global studies class or my sociology classes or my social justice classes.
In my Social Movements class and my Intro to Social Justice class I feel like I am really being equipped with tools and ways of thinking about things that will really effect the kind of change I want to see in the world. It's incredibly empowering.
I suppose this is the way school should be, but I think that in before post secondary education in our system it's sometimes hard to feel like what you're learning is good for anything other than learning how to learn or think critically, which, while invaluable, should not be mutually exclusive with practicality.
